OK …….. Time To Face The Music!

Posted by Miss Ross | OK ........ Favorite Musical Artists | Thursday 30 July 2009 11:18 pm

HAYYYYY!!  OK …….. Yesterday, I was blabbing on and on with my friend, Sharon, about the latest Michael Jackson news, the passing of E. Lynn Harris, and of course my love of diva music!  So, as we are talking about Klymaxxx ["Meeting In The Ladies Room"] and Ms. Jody Watley ["Don't You Want Me?"], Sharon asks, "Diva!  How do you know all this stuff?  You know more about R&B than some of my friends."

Without blinking a eye, I said, "Sharon, I am a black woman trapped in a white man's body!  Can I be your sistah?"

Sometimes you gotta face the music Miss Ross!

And speaking of facing the music, here is a clip from one of my favorite songs in the early 90's .. Yazz's "The Only Way Is Up."  I first saw this incredible singer [who, like me, also appears to be a trapped black woman] on Club MTV with Downtown Julie Brown!

OK …….. While You Were Not Paying Attention ……..

Posted by Miss Ross | OK ........ My Opinion .. And I Have One!, Uncategorized | Monday 27 July 2009 10:43 pm

HAYYYYY!!  OK …….. When I'm not surfing the web for the latest on Michael's will, I usually end reading my favorite political / social commentary blogs [Joe.My.God; AmericaBlog, and The Bilerico Project].  In the past few weeks, all three blogs have touched upon three growing concerns within the LGBT community:

1.  The continuing disappointment that many gay men and women [especially white] have toward President Obama, and what they perceive as his lack of commitment to gay causes such as the Defense of Marriage Act [DOMA], Don't Ask Don't Tell [DADT], and Marriage Equality.  For these disappointed and angry individuals, Obama appears to have fallen behind on his campaign promises.

2.  There was a recent cover article in the Advocate, which stated that "Gay Is The New Black."  Needless to say, such a proclamation incensed and upset many within the African American community, who see no association between their struggle and the gay civil rights movement.  From what I've read, a large number within the African American community, still do not fully accept gay men and women, and view "gay rights" as a wealthy white concern.  One writer stated that the community is very protective of Obama, and hold a low opinion of gay individuals or groups that attack a man whot has been in office for less than a year.

3.  Although, I do not know all the details, plans have been put into effect for a gay march on Washington in October.  Why??  I'm not exactly sure.  You have one part of the gay community that states "now" is the time, when issues such as DOMA and DADT are in the forefront.  Then you have others who do not think enough planning and thought have gone into the event, and that there needs to be more grassroots / local action.

All three concerns that I mentioned are valid, and have human faces and feelings behind them.  BUT PEOPLE, WAKE UP!!!!!!!

Do you not notice that there is a growing tide of anger from the conservative / religious right?  It first begins with mouthpieces like Rep. Sally Kern, which leads to the career comeback of Ralph Reed.  Are you not noticing the growing hate crimes and political strength that is coming from the fundamental slavic / croatian groups which currently live up and down the west coast?  These are immigrants who are slowly achieving political power through sheer numbers.  And although I hope that Obama is able to make some changes, if he loses in 2012, we could be experiencing Reagan Part Two [and remember his track record on gay rights and the AIDS epidemic].

I write all this with a sense of frustration.  As if I could yell, "LGBT community!  Focus!  While you are worrying about what kind of fundraiser to hold on Marriage Equality, those that would like to erase your existence, are creating real harm, right under your nose."

We need to go back to the communities, we need to find and elect local and state officials who are answerable to our concerns.  I believe that DOMA and DADT need to be addressed in the current year.  But I also believe that laws protecting employment and gay adoption should also be at the forefront.  These are local and state issues that need immediate attention.  And for all the disappointed Obama fans .. remember that he can only do so much.

One last thing .. I will never know what life is like as an African American man [as Miss Ross maybe, but that is a different post].  Why do I need to attach my cause and concerns onto his?  LGBT Community!  Be proud of your own identity.

I recently heard an incredible interview [on Jonny McGovern's podcast] with Richard Berkowitz, one of the original creators of Safe Sex.  In the interview he made a statement that I am now trying to follow:

"Be Yourself!  Happiness comes from being who you are.  And if you are an outcast, learn to love yourself.  And **** what everybody else says!  You've got to celebrate your own uniqueness."

Posted by Miss Ross | All About Mr. Roscoe, OK ........ Shout Out Time! | Saturday 25 July 2009 2:34 pm

HAYYYYY!!  OK …….. It has been almost a week since my last post.  BAD Miss Ross!  BAD Miss Ross!  But, I have an excuse, .. work has been wearing my supermodel who turned their celebrity into a non-existent singing career OUT!!  Hear that Naomi Campbell??

Anywhoo, I know it is time to get back on the blogging wagon.  And I want to start off by giving a HUGE SHOUT OUT to my new neighborhood friends, "THE HACKBERRY GIRLS!"  HAYYYYY to Gina, Anne, Cindy, Peggy and honorary Hackberry, Diana!  Of course, Gina had to give me some lip about not mentioning the Fourth of July party the Hackberrys threw a few weeks ago.  Just who do these ladies think they are??  All that and a bag of chips .. Cool Ranch Doritos??  Soooo .. Yes, the ladies threw a great Fourth party, that was actually held on the third.  Apparently, I live in a town that likes to defy nature and celebrate our nation on a date different from the rest of the U.S.A.!  Once again, a huge HAYYYYY to the Hackberrys!

As you can see the photo above, Mr. Man is relaxing after a busy morning of get up daddy, go out, eat breakfast, get back into bed with daddy, continue the destruction of one of his new toys, back out again, and then an afternoon treat!

QUESTION! .. and I know that I have talked about this before, but not sure if I have shared on the blog, but how many of your neighbors or acquaintances know you due to your pet and not your name?  I have met so many of my neighbors due to Mr. Man's nightly walks.  This has been a great way to meet my neighbors, but, now I am known more as .. "Hey, there's Roscoe!  Hey Roscoe!  And hey to YOU.  Yes, YOU, who are holding Roscoe's leash.  I know YOU have a name and probably a soul, but what is it?"

Yes, my identity has been reduced to, "hey there's that guy that walks Roscoe," or "hey, that's Roscoe's owner."  No wonder Judy was so ready to get rid of Toto after returning from OZ!  But I love my Mr. Bossy Pants!

OK …….. Shout Out Time: For Colored Girls .. At True Colors Theatre Co!

Posted by Miss Ross | OK ........ Shout Out Time! | Sunday 19 July 2009 11:33 pm

HAYYYYY!!  OK …….. Major Shout Out to the True Colors Theatre Company, for their incredible production of FOR COLORED GIRLS ……..!  I had the opportunity to see the show tonight with my friend A.B., and after the curtain call, we were both left with "WOW!"

In addition to the performance, we stayed for the talk back with Jasmine Guy and all the actresses.

I had heard monologues from FOR COLORED GIRLS .. for many years, but never had the chance to see a production.  True Colors' decision to have Jasmine Guy direct was truly inspired.  The actresses [four of whom had worked with Jasmine before] knew the women they were portraying, not just reciting lines in order to get through the Sunday night performance.  I have to mentioned Nevaina Rhodes and Crystal Fox as the two actresses that stood out the most.  These ladies KNOW HOW TO ACT!!

During the talk back, someone asked if they thought the message of the play had changed since the original production in 1974.  Two of the actresses remarked that subjects such as rape and abortion were no longer issues that people did not acknowledge [but everyone knew existed].  However, another actress stated that the play was not written during the time of AIDS and lesbianism within the African American community.  So, Ntozake, we need FOR COLORED GIRLS part two!

This is the second production I have seen at True Colors .. and both times, I have left very impressed.  People in Atlanta!  This is a theatre company with some incredible talent!  AND they have the best damn Marketing Director in town, Jenn Dwyer!

OK …….. Reflections From The Dog Park

Posted by Miss Ross | All About Mr. Roscoe | Sunday 12 July 2009 11:38 pm

HAYYYYY!!  OK …….. I have started taking Roscoe to the dog park every couple of days.  I like the fact that he can run, run, and run .. ie the dog park tires Mr. Man OUT!  While watching and following Roscoe, I've made a few observations that I would like to share with the class:

1.  For some reason, small dogs [ie .. teacup size] feel this overwhelming need to bark whenever another dog or person comes within "their" space.  WHY??  There are 15 various dogs running around, but Fe-Fe has to tell everyone to "talk to the hand."

2.  You have owners like me, who trail behind their dogs just to make sure there on no fights on the school yard.  And then you have others who grab a seat, start reading their book or get on the cell phone.  And if their dog is involved in a throwdown, the only action is to yell across the yard, "Ray-Ray be nice!  Ray-Ray play nice!"  Lady, Ray-Ray is laying on top of another dog, and growling if anyone comes near.

3.  Even though the park has an "doggie" water fountain, it is never operational.  Therefore, I always bring a bottle of cold water and bowl for Mr. R.  If another dog comes along and starts drinking from the bowl, no problem, the water is for everyone.  However, I have actually seen owners push other dogs away from water bowls they place on the ground.  Lady, your dog just spent five minutes smelling every other dog's butt in the park .. we can all share the Evian.

OK ……. For Me It Was Really All About LaToya’s Hat!

Posted by Miss Ross | OK ........ I Just Have A Few Questions | Tuesday 7 July 2009 11:27 pm

HAYYYYY!!  OK …….. While the Jackson ceremony was going on and on and on at work, and while I was making some constructive "comments," a co-worker suggested that I might be a little insensitive.  ME??  Insensitive??  What are you talking about??

BUTTTTTTTT, since we are on the subject of the Jackson ceremony, I had a few questions:

1.  Besides Mariah, Janet, and maybe Usher, where were all the BIG names?  I know that Madonna is on tour overseas, but what about Prince?  Oprah?  Bill and Hill Clinton?  Elton John?  That guy from Webster?  Not to mention, MJ's diva trio, Miss Ross, Elizabeth Taylor and Liza?  I think it is very telling that Miss Ross, of all people, was not there.

2.  I'm sure that kid who was a finalist on Britain's Got Talent, is incredibly gifted.  But what happened Tito??  Was Sanjaya busy?  Besides Mariah, didn't the Jacksons know anyone more famous to perform?  No Justin Timberlake.  No Miley.  No Beyonce [maybe since she is on tour, but you could have at least gotten Solange!].

3.  And speaking of Miss Mariah …….. Am I the only one who thinks she looked suspiciously pregnant in that dress?  Remember how J-Lo [why wasn't she at this shin-dig] denied she was pregnant, while wearing loose fitting, high waisted skirts?  And once again, was I the only one who was worried that Jennifer Hudson might have her baby on that stage today?

4.  Another co-worker asked a golden question ……. who is paying for all this hoopla?

5.  But all these questions and concerns are just petty thoughts when we come to LaToya.  Toy-Toy, Toy-Toy, what is with that hat?  I know the video above is about MJ's daughter, but this is one of the few pics I could find of LaToya's hat.  Do not get me wrong, I love this hat.  I WANT this hat.  But Toy, what have you gotten hid up under there?  And why can we only see half of your face?

In my opinion, LaToya is the ultimate Jackson!  If you want a truly moving and life affirming read, rush to your nearest second or third hand bookstore [because no library is going to be seen with this book] and purchase her autobiography, LATOYA.  Prepare to be moved many times!

OK …….. Am I The Only Person Who Could Not Understand What Sarah Plain And Unending Was Rambling About?

Posted by Miss Ross | OK ........ I Just Have A Few Questions | Saturday 4 July 2009 12:59 am

HAYYYYY!!  OK …….. I just watched Gov. Sarah Palin's resignation speech twice [thanks to the incredible website/blogger Joe at http://www.joemygod.blogspot.com/].  I watched Sarah twice and still could not understand what she was talking about.  I heard her mention the word "resigning," but everything else was all over the place.  Naturally, this led me to ask some questions:

1.  Sarah was once a vice-presidential nominee, and the current governor of Alaska.  She is resigning as governor for unknown reasons.  She holds a press conference in her backyard, and when the camera pans the rapt audience .. there are only 20 to 25 people!  What Sarah?  No Twitter?  Where was everybody?  Heading for MJ's funeral?

2.  She went on and on about some basketball analogy that I could not understand.  Did anyone in Alaska know that this woman REALLY wanted to play for the WNBA?  Maybe Sarah is really a Sappho Sister?

3.  Will her resignation ruin her contract negotiations with Lens Crafters?  Or those people that sell that hair pony tail thingy on TV around 2:00 AM?

4.  On a personal note, what will happen to Todd Palin?  Because Daaaaaaaaam!  He could have a new career as the Brawny paper towel man, or the new Diet Coke guy!

5.  Will this ruin the modeling/cover story/shoe-in for a reality series career of Bristol Palin's boyfriend, and the father of Sarah's grandchild, Levi Johnston?  And you know some child talent agency needs to give Piper Palin her own Disney series!  What was that child wearing at the press conference attended by 10?

6.  Did you notice that Sarah never thanked her staff?  Besides talking about basketball, she went on and on about her kids.  Did she not have a staff?

7.  And the question that I'm sure is on La Toya Jackson's mind, as well as mine .. why exactly is she quitting?
